[bquote_left]This March, The Sylvia Center began a new program for teens at the Drew Hamilton NYCHA Community Center in Harlem. [/bquote_left] For the next ten weeks, twenty young people ages 14 -19 will learn the fundamental techniques of the culinary arts. The curriculum is designed as an abbreviated professional course aimed at offering students a taste of life in the food industry. The students will also hear from guest professionals and visit the Inwood Farmer’s Market and a restaurant kitchen. Those who are so inspired may apply to The Sylvia Center as culinary interns. Regardless of their chosen paths, these young people will benefit from ten weeks of concentrated teamwork in an exciting field. And they will have learned skills that will serve them and their families for a lifetime.
