Serves: 8
Prep Time: 60 mins total (20 mins per recipe)
Notes: gluten-free if using GF pretzel sticks

Green Apple Monsters

2 green apples, cored and quartered
2 Tbsp chocolate sunbutter
1 ½ Tbsp pepitas
2 small strawberries, very thinly sliced
¼ banana, thinly sliced
16 semi-sweet chocolate chips

Recipe Method

  1. Carefully slice out a v-shape into the center of each apple quarter (skin-side) to create the monster mouths. Using a butter knife, gently spread a thin layer of sunbutter onto each side of the monster’s mouth.
  2. Add the monster’s teeth: press the sharp end of the pepitas along the edge of the top apple mouth. Repeat along the bottom, leaving space in the center (or the side for a cheekier version) for the strawberry tongue. Position one thin strawberry slice in each mouth.
  3. Cut the banana into medium slices: you’ll need 4 slices for this recipe. Cut each slice into quarters, then trim the center corner until it’s round. These will make the monster’s eyes.
  4. To secure the monster’s eyes, place a small amount of sunbutter onto the back of the banana slices, and press onto the apple quarter, just above the mouth. Press a chocolate chip into the banana eye. Serve and enjoy!
Recipe Ingredients Substitutions
Chocolate sunbutter Tahini, nut butter (be careful of nut allergies, especially in classroom settings)
Goat cheese Sunflower seeds
Recipe Notes
Choose a tart-sweet apple like Granny Smith for the best texture and flavor. These little monsters contain very little added sugar, while still packing flavor!

Boo-nanas

4 small-medium bananas, peeled and cut in half
16 mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
8 regular-sized semi-sweet chocolate chips
4oz white chocolate, melted (optional)
8 small wooden skewers

Recipe Method

  1. Take a wooden skewer and insert into the cut flat-side of the halved banana, so the banana looks like a popsicle. Lay the bananas out on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.
  2. Using a spoon, drizzle each banana with the melted white chocolate (if using).
  3. Lay the bananas back on the sheet. On each banana, about a thumb’s-width from the tip, press 2 mini chocolate chips into the banana for eyes. Just below (and between) the eyes, press a regular-sized chocolate chip for the mouth.
  4. Refrigerate until the white chocolate sets, around 10–15 mins. Serve and enjoy!
Recipe Ingredients Substitutions
Semi-sweet chocolate chips Regular or dark chocolate chips
White chocolate No-added-sugar white chocolate
Recipe Notes
Skip the white chocolate drizzle if you’re short on time! Bananas are packed with potassium, which helps kids keep their energy up, their muscles working, and their hearts healthy.

Spider Bites

8 oz semisweet chocolate chips
⅓ C chocolate sunbutter
3-4 C mini pretzel sticks

Recipe Method

  1. Place parchment paper on a baking sheet and set aside. In a large glass bowl, combine the chocolate chips and chocolate sunbutter. Use the microwave to melt on high for 2–3 mins, stirring every minute—or use a double boiler by setting the glass bowl over a pan of boiling water until the chocolate melts. Remove from the microwave/heat, and stir until smooth.
  2. Stir in the pretzel sticks. Using a fork, lift the chocolate-coated pretzel sticks out of the bowl and position in small clusters on the lined baking sheet to look like spiders. You may need to adjust: use a fork if staying clean, or let the kids get their hands messy and dive right in!
  3. Place the baking tray in the freezer for 5 mins (or fridge for 20 mins), until the chocolate is set. Serve and enjoy!
Recipe Ingredients Substitutions
Semi-sweet chocolate chips Regular or dark chocolate chips
Mini pretzel sticks Gluten-free pretzel sticks
Recipe Notes
If you can’t find mini pretzel sticks, simply use regular pretzel sticks and break them into halves or thirds. Sunbutter can be replaced with nut butter, but be careful of allergies, especially in classroom settings.
