This fall, The Sylvia Center kicked off a new partnership with Knights Table Pantry, a student food pantry at Queen’s College in Flushing, Queens.
Knights Table has been supporting students since 2018, providing groceries and pantry staples on campus, at no cost, using both donations and a dedicated food budget. This semester, they’re providing The Sylvia Center meal kits, each kit coming with access to a live virtual cooking class led by TSC Chef Educator Yesenia Arrunategui.
For our first class, Yesenia led students through a recipe for Cauliflower Tacos with Creamy Salsa Verde, chosen in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. All 25 spots for the class were filled almost immediately—and even had a waitlist! We ended up packing a few extra kits to meet demand, and the feedback has been incredible.
“It was so much fun and honestly gave me so much motivation to make a healthy dinner instead of ordering out!”, laughed student Gabriella. “Yesenia was an amazing instructor. 10/10.”
Fellow Queens College student Aliyah shared: “My dad’s diabetic, so food can be finicky here, but this meal was extremely healthy and didn’t cause a huge blood sugar spike. It means a lot! The cauliflower tacos were very tasty, and I ended up making them again.”
With another class planned next month, we’re thrilled to shine a light on the incredible work Knights Table is doing to support their community, and to continue growing this partnership—helping students build confidence in the kitchen while connecting over fresh, healthy, affordable food.
