A few weeks ago, students in our Teen Culinary Apprenticeship had the opportunity to explore a different side of the food world: storytelling.

As part of our Work-Based Learning program, students welcomed Eater Social Video Producer Sergio Scardigno for a hands-on introduction to food videography. While preparing enchiladas together in class, students learned how professional food content is planned, filmed, and produced.

Visual Storytelling

Throughout the session, Sergio demonstrated techniques for capturing cooking footage, including lighting, framing, movement, and close-up food shots. Students took turns filming ingredients, documenting the cooking process, and experimenting with the tools used to create engaging food videos.

Of course, there was plenty of cooking, too. Students chopped vegetables, prepared fillings, assembled enchiladas, and worked together to bring the recipe from prep table to finished dish.

The Teen Culinary Apprenticeship helps young people build practical culinary skills while exploring career pathways across the food system. Experiences like this introduce students to the many professions that surround food—from hospitality and education to media, communications, and content creation. Check out the video here!

A huge thank you to Sergio for sharing his expertise and giving our students an inside look at the art of food storytelling.
