The Sylvia Center and Jamie Oliver on Good Morning America

On Tuesday, TSC student Alexa joined global chef and child health advocate Jamie Oliver on Good Morning America for a cooking segment highlighting family-friendly meals appropriate for cooks of all ages.

Hailing from TSC’s Hillcrest High School Teen Culinary Apprenticeship work-based learning program, teen chef Alexa appeared alongside fellow high school cooks from the Urban Assembly Maker Academy to help Oliver make a chopped green salad and a classic pasta with tomato pan sauce.

Oliver is in the US promoting his Ministry of Food’s Ten Skills Food Education platform, which brings free nutrition education and cooking training to middle and high schoolers across the country:

“Everyone should have the opportunity to learn to cook; without it we become dependent on others to feed us, or on convenience foods to fuel us–neither of which is sustainable. It’s crucial that young people have a good understanding of where food comes from, how to cook it and how it affects our bodies for good health in later life.”

Oliver’s Ministry of Food has been operating in the UK since 2008, and is now used in 500 schools and community organizations. Focusing on ten core life skills–including budgeting and nutrition basics–the program offers resources for kids aged 11–14, including online cooking classes with The Jamie Oliver Cookery School and exclusive all-ages recipes.

TSC’s innovative Teen Culinary Apprenticeship work-based learning program focuses on this kind of skill-development for 16–18 year olds. It comprises advanced cooking and baking techniques, nutrition knowledge and job-readiness skills such as networking, resumé development and interview preparation. The program culminates in six weeks of paid work-based learning experiences, where the teens have on-site support from the TSC team, and weekly reflection and development meetings.
