Young people making healthy food

“The Sylvia Center made eating healthy, and delicious. It encouraged students to try new things, and it helped prepare us for working with kids. I’m excited for the things to come.”

-Rita, Teen Culinary Apprenticeship program alumna

Dear Friend

Rita, and the other 145 motivated high school students who graduated from the Teen Culinary Apprenticeship (TCA), are the next generation of healthy food advocates. They participate in a 16-week intensive course, where students chop, sauté, build confidence, learn how to make healthy food choices, and eat their way through the kitchen. This prepares them to teach cooking classes focused on healthy eating to youth ages 5-10 in summer camps throughout New York City.

This past summer our TCA students, including Rita, taught more than 700 youth. It was a record-breaking year! We are so proud of the vital, and expanding role our students play in creating healthy change in their communities.

Support healthy change in our community

The Sylvia Center programs are relevant now more than ever. The rates of obesity among middle and high school students have increased from 2012-2018 and studies show that programs supporting good nutrition, physical activity, and overall health positively impact youth (NYS Health Dept). Since the return to in person programming this past summer, The Sylvia Center has seen a 35% growth in students from pre-pandemic levels.

We need your help continuing to create the next generation of leaders in food education, food access, and food equity. Donate today!

Thank you for your generous support of our life-altering programs.

With gratitude,

Barbara A. Glassman
